Beacons are a small device adhered to any flat surface that broadcast radio signals using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Smartphones that are nearby listen for these signals and communicate with the beacon to deliver unique content and experience to the smartphone user. The opportunity lies within both the customer and company to benefit from the beacon. When a customer enters within the 70m radius of the beacon and has the appropriate application on their smartphone, the application will hear the iBeacon and send the relevant data to its server in the form of a push notification for example. This in turn gives an opportunity to the company to relay targeted advertisements, special offers and helpful reminders.
